Protecting the downstream migration of salmon smolts from hydroelectric power plants with inclined racks and optimized bypass water discharge

چکیده
The sustained development of hydropower energy in the last century has caused important ecological impacts, promoting recent advances efficient mitigation measures to be implemented existing and future plants. Although upstream fish migration been largely addressed with fish-pass infrastructures, downstream passage solutions are often missing or inefficient, strengthening need for their improvement efficiency assessment. horizontally inclined (26°) low bar spacing racks associated a bypass was assessed using salmon smolts radiotelemetry along three successive plants (HPP) Ariège River (southern France). In average, nearly 90% were successfully protected by rapidly guided bypass, within few minutes most cases. Furthermore, we detected significant positive influence discharge (Qbp% expressed as proportion concurrent HPP discharge) on probability successful passage, reaching 85% Qbp% only 3%, more than 92% when exceeded 5%. without hesitation (e.g. first 5 min) also increased Qbp%, reached 5% Qbp%. Passage especially site having larger entrances transversal currents, providing better guidance into bypass. High-efficiency results yielded reduced confirmed relevance mitigate some re-establishing safe lower impact production older less solutions.

Physiological and endocrine changes in Atlantic salmon smolts during hatchery rearing, downstream migration, and ocean entry
Billions of hatchery salmon smolts are released annually in an attempt to mitigate anthropogenic impacts on freshwater habitats, often with limited success. Mortality of wild and hatchery fish is high during downstream and early ocean migration. To understand changes that occur during migration, we examined physiological and endocrine changes in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts during hatch...
متن کاملSalt and water balance in salmon smolts.
INTRODUCTION Although the salmon is probably the best known euryhaline fish, for the first 2 or 3 years of its life it is stenohaline. The salmon becomes euryhaline only in the smolt stage, the process of 'smoltification' taking place in April or May in fish 2 or 3 years old, although a proportion of late parr can tolerate sea water. In recent years a more detailed picture has emerged of salt a...
متن کاملDownstream Migration of Salmon Smolts in Regulated Rivers: Factors Affecting Survival and Behaviour
Atlantic salmon is one of the most widely known migratory fish species whose populations have declined because of hydropower installations. Attempts have been made to preserve salmon stocks in regulated rivers by building fishways for adult fish migrating upstream, but downstream migration of salmon smolts has been almost totally ignored. Instead, captive breeding programmes and extensive stock...

Model-Free Based Water Level Control for Hydroelectric Power Plants
Automatic water level control methods for open channels have difficulties to keep good performances for a large range of flow and significant unknown disturbances. A new concept called Model-Free Control is applied in this paper for hydroelectric run-of-the river power plants. To modulate power generation, a level trajectory is planned for cascaded power plants. Numerous dynamic simulations sho...
